Kalabria-Dardania Connection Platform

The project proposes a major urban infrastructure and public space development linking the Kalabria and Dardania neighborhoods in Prishtina. The initiative aims to enhance mobility, improve pedestrian and cycling connectivity, and create a modern public realm that strengthens urban integration and economic activity between two key city districts.

Overview.

The Hydro Energy Revival project breathes new life into existing hydropower infrastructure, revitalizing outdated systems with modern technologies and sustainable engineering. By upgrading small and mid-scale hydro facilities, we’ve helped communities and utilities reclaim clean, reliable power from natural waterways — without the need for large-scale new construction. This initiative showcases how smart retrofitting can turn legacy assets into future-ready energy solutions.

Project goals.

The primary goals of the Hydro Energy Revival project were:

  • To modernize aging hydropower plants for higher efficiency and reliability.

  • To increase renewable energy output without disrupting local ecosystems.

  • To reduce maintenance costs and operational downtime.

  • To demonstrate the potential of hydro retrofitting as a scalable climate solution.

"The Hydro Energy Revival project has proven that our aging infrastructure still holds incredible potential. With the right upgrades, we’re generating clean energy, protecting ecosystems, and creating local jobs — all without building a single new dam.”

Key solutions implemented.

The revival began with a comprehensive audit of several inactive or underperforming hydropower sites. Key upgrades included:

Turbine refurbishment & replacement: Outdated turbines were replaced with high-efficiency, low-impact models that generate more power with less water flow.

Advanced control systems: Automation and remote monitoring tools were introduced to optimize operations and detect issues in real-time.

Eco-friendly water management: Fish-friendly designs, flow controls, and sediment management systems were implemented to protect local biodiversity.

Energy storage integration: Select sites were paired with battery storage systems, allowing surplus power to be used during peak demand or stored for grid stability.

Grid synchronization: Upgraded plants were reconnected to regional grids with smart inverter technologies, enabling real-time power balancing and improved transmission.

Outcomes achieved.

  • Energy output: Increased by up to 50% at each rehabilitated facility.

  • Carbon offset: Prevented over 2,500 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

  • Operational efficiency: Downtime reduced by 60%, and maintenance costs cut by 40%.

  • Environmental compliance: All sites now meet or exceed current ecological regulations.

  • Community benefits: Local jobs created through site upgrades and long-term maintenance contracts.

By combining innovation with respect for natural ecosystems, this project proves that existing hydropower assets can be transformed into efficient, eco-friendly energy sources. Communities gain renewed access to clean power, while the environment benefits from sustainable waterway management.
